I have a dell dimension 81 and it only has 256 ram. I want to add another 512. What do I need to know about the memory before I buy it? Does it have to be dell brand? thanks for your time.

First there is no such brand as dell ram , they just sell another companies ram as dell ram
In that case you can buy any ram and it should in theory work fine
Just go to crucial http://www.crucial.com/ and run their memory scanner it will tell you what you need , you can then also buy some ram from crucial which i would suggest because they gurantee compatibility

You don't seem to mention that RDRAM also needs to be installed in pairs.

If your system really does take RDRAM (I didn't think the 8100's did), it's useless to get more ram and it's more worthwhile to just replace the entire computer.

You cannot use DDR or SDRAM in your computer. As stated you need the special highly expensive RDRAM for your computer.

If it uses RDRAM, I'd say save your money for a new system. RDRAM is expensive, besides I don't even think it's used in home computers today or if it is it's impossible to find one that uses it. Save your money and build a new system with DDR2 which is very reasonably priced. You could buy a refurbished system with DDR that you can upgrade, for the price of RDRAM.

Ouch I feel your pain man. My old gateway I bought had Rdram in it because it was supposed to be the latest and greatest tech. Sucks though it never took off and is highly overpriced compared to normal Sdram.

The ram you have selected there in the ebay link should work. If you can get it for that price your getting a steal.
