CHKDSK Utility

Windows XP will not boot and keeps going to a blue error screen. I have booted the machine using the XP boot disk which takes me to the DOS cursor but I still cannot access the hard drive using the CHKDSK utility. Can somebody please advise ona possible alternative or tell me exactly what to type in to use this facility.
