Charging IBM laptop from car

i wanna be able to charge my IBM T40 from my car, im just confused on what to get to charge it.
will it matter if i get one of those universal DC to AC inverters that plug into my cigarette lighter? cause im just worried that there might be a surge or something and fry my laptop, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

There might be some sort of voltage regulater you could find. MOST laptops could actually be plugged directly into the cigarette lighter with a simple cable going from that to the laptop seeing as they run off 12v DC, but don't hold me to this as I don't know the specs on yours.

An inverter should work, but I have heard that you arn't suppose to plug stuff such as laptops into them. I know when I plug my laptop into it(which is a different laptop that draws MUCH more power than a standard one, but less than a desktop) it works, but the power supply buzzes a bit.
