I have a new work laptop with windows 7 pro 64bit. With my job we have to connect to equipment with a serial port and since you can't get laptops with serial ports I purchased a USB to serial adapter which works fine except with one type of equipment we work on the software only lets you select COM 1 or COM 2 and with the adapter depending on which usb port I plug it into it is COM 3 4 or 5. Is there a way to make it come up as COM 1 or 2 so I can connect.

Start > (right click) Computer > Manage > (Left pane) Device Manager > *Find COM Ports* > (Right click) Properties > (Tab) Port Settings > Advanced

From there, you should be able to reassign the COM label.
