ive been having to manually recover my system several times now because windows will not boot at all...not even in safe mode. It will pass the bios check then ill get the WindowsXP loading screen for a few seconds, then just a black screen that will just sit there forever. luckily i came across this great article that lets me recover almost everything:

It's quite a pain and i cant figure out what's causing it. When i first got this system in July i had a DVD burner that i thought was causing all of this (it happened several times in the first month), then i got rid the burner and didnt have a problem again until today...now the same thing again.
I wonder if it could be a bad HD or maybe a bad mainboard? anyone ever hear of something similar?
oh and it's an intel 915 board and 250G WD sata HD. thanks
