anti static wristbands?

ok, not sure how this work...first time building a computer. i've heard people say they've friend their computers by not wearing this wristband. do i HAVE to buy it, or is there some way around it?

u dont have to buy it just make sure u dont have any static eletricty on u before you touch the comp

Ground yourself and touch metal, aka power supply. door handle. whatever is metal

and dont wear socks or sweaters

and i have to be touching metal at all times while handling the cpu, mobo, memory...ect?

ok...one other thing...what surfaces are good to work on? i have a wood table...would that be ok? the table is on laminent(sp?) flooring. or i could do it on plain wood floor...which would be the best option?

Plain wood and laminent both work good. Put ur pc on a wooden table with a towel on top is what I did.

Only time you need a wrist band is when you work on a live electral system..

Like our phone system. The system runs 24/7, we have to pull cards everyone once in a while. While the unit is on we wear a wrist band because the electical current can cause static..

But if you have your system off and unplugged follow the instructions above.
