"320GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9" vs. "320GB WD Caviar SE16" - WHICH HD IS BETTER!???

Hi everyone,

I recently got my new replacement Dell Dimension 9200 PC system. I got a new one from Dell because my initial Dimension 9200 PC system was making lots of vibration / buzzing noises.

Now here's my situation:

My new replacement PC came with a "320 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9" (Model#ST3320633AS). Is this a good hard drive compared to the "320 GB Western Digital Caviar SE16" (Model#WD3200KS - 75PFB0) on my older pc system (the defective one)? Keep in mind, I haven't returned the defective one yet as I'm deciding if it's worth exchanging it with a different HD; unless I can swap my old HD from the defectives one and put it in the new PC system?

Also, I can't find this Seagate model# (model#ST3320633AS) on their official website. Is this normal? The physical sticker label says it's Barracuda 7200.9 model. However, on the following chinese website below, it references the "model#ST3320633AS" as a Barracuda 7200.10 (the one with perpendicular recording technology). If it's the one w/ the perpedicular technology then I presume it should be definitely better than the WD Caviar SE16 HD. What you guys think?

Here's the link which references the Segate model#ST3320633AS as a Barracuda 7200.10 ---> http://pdlib.pconline.com.cn/product...oductId=172273

Can someone help me decide if it's worth keeping the Seagate model vs. the WD model?

Thanks for the help everyone!

probably cant find it on the seagate website cos it is a oem model of hard drive , althhough you still should be able to find it
and if that is the drive with perpendicular recording then it is a very good drive better than a wd caviar anyday in my opinion

u could get the new WD and still keep the old one as ur secondary and have 640gb. then just put ur OS on the faster HDD.

It's hard to say since u dont kno exactly if its the 7200.9 or 10 if it'd be better than the WD

I'd go with the seagate drive. The perpendicular recording is great some tests say its close to the 10krpm raptor drives in some tests. I'd check out newegg not sure what price your looking at but I got a deal on my seagate 400gb drive for $109.99. Last time I checked though it went back up to like $130 or so.

I have that seagate hard drive. Its on newegg, and it works really well. Stick with it.

7200.9 is NOT perpendicular. The SE16 is though. If the 7200.9 is actually a 7200.10, go with that, but if not go with the SE16.

Re: "320GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9" vs. "320GB WD Caviar SE16" - WHICH HD IS BETTER!

Is there a way I can 100% be sure that the Seagate has 7200.10's 'PERDENDICULAR RECORDING TECHNOLOGY'? The reason I'm asking is because the sticker label on the hd indicates it's a "7200.9'....however, when I did a search on the model# indicated on the HD, a online store website showed that it was a recognized as a 7200.10. Keep in mind the model# on my HD is not even listed on the seagate website. I guess since this was installed by DELL, the HD was specialized for DELL ONLY....

So as you can see, the information is conflicting...I don't which is which....so is there a way I can find out through the windows OS or a apps program that can tell me it's using perpedicular recording technology or can show me details of the HD's specs?

Thanks guys.

ok is nobody gonna answer this guys initial question,

in answer to the question try applications such as everest home edition http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

or pc wizard 2007 http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php

both these programes are free to download and if you go through to the hard drive section on both they should tell ya what the hard drive is
