Lagging in Age of Empires 3?

Hi. My fps is perfectly high and normal spiking around 150-230 during regular gameplay in aoe3. However, when we create a big army and start battling with all the little warriors fighting..lol, my game begins to have intense graphic lag. (freezing and unfreezing) Going down to 10-27fps. Is this just how the game is or is it my problem?

AsRock Z77 Extreme 4 mobo
AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB GPU
Intel core i5-2500k stock cpu
8gb ddr3 ram

Try updating graphics drivers.

ATI has sent off faulty drivers in the past.
