Yes it works, it's a great program and its saved my PC a few times. I've used it for awhile. it's light on RAM and detects very well. However the best free AV in my opinion is avira, it's ranked right up there with NOD32 which is highly rated.

I'm an AVG fan personally. It's great.

AVG does work very well. The only issue that I have with it is updating. At times it has trouble receiving updates, but eventually it'll work.

The best thing about AVG. is it doesnt use hardly any resources not like symantec which is a HOG,and it is a dang good AVG,did I mention that its free?????

The FREE version of AVG is pretty good. However, Kaspersky is better. Don't believe me? Scan your system with AVG fully updated, then scan your system with Kaspersky. It will find things AVG will miss.

Kaspersky is good, but I prefer NOD32 since it's less resource hungry. I also don't like the amount of false positives kaspersky tends to give.

Funny you say NOD32 is "less resource hungry" than Kaspersky considering KASPERSKY relinquishes ram to other applications. So it's not so resource hungry as some people assume.
