There was a email I received pretending to be Apple saying that my account needed to be updated. It was obviously not from Apple. They wanted me to click on a link and answer some questions. Would just opening the email get me infected.

Sounds like a phishing attack. The sender was hoping you would open the link and answer the questions. Then they'd attempt to use your answers to gain access to your account via the password reset option on Apple's website.

If you did not click on the link or provide any personal information then your security would not have been compromised.

Opening an email is usually ok, there are some exceptions but never click a link or open any attachments.

You can look forward to getting a lot more of them if you opened the email.
