GENERAL HOUSE CLEANING.
HERE ARE SOME GENERAL HOUSE KEEPING FOR YOUR COMPUTER: This is for Windows XP cleaning
ok, 1st boot up to safe mode, once there, start/ run/ type msconfig....check the startup tab.
this will be a list of everything that starts up at boot...if you see a program .exe in their that's giving you problems or just being annoining, just untic the box...
ok, now go to control panel/network & internet settings/ internet options...delete cookies, click delete button & delete all offline cookies.
Now click settings...see the box that has MB next to it...set it to 60mb to 80mb...by default....windows sets this to 650mb...no body needs that much space for cookies unless their downloading movies.
now click on advanced tab...scroll down the list til you get to ...(empty temporary internet cookies at close) & put a check in the box.
now , it's time to check what's in the run & run once folder's in the registry.
start/ run/ type reg edit and hit enter ..now, go to :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRE NT VERSION\RUN
this will be the run folder...now check for anything that should'nt be in there...or a program .exe
that is giving you problems, and delete the string.
this is ok to do, cause what you are doing is deleting
the short cut that was placed in the startup folder
during the install.
now that that's done, their should be a folder right under that called the run once folder.
Now what ever is in that folder...delete...you don't need anything in there. now your done .
now go to the windows folder on the hhd.(harddrive) & delete all that is in the pre-fetch folder.
once that's done, go to start/ all programs/ accessories/ system tools/ disk defragmenter.
run that...it will take less time to run cause nothing is running in the background... now , to make shure to cover all the spyware that may be hiding on your drive, run all your spyware programs & make shure that you keep them updated...
also one other thing, if your comp. starts to slow down, check your virtual memory settings...some times spyware will change it without you knowing it, and will have a big effect on your comp.
there now your done..
edit : just an update..
To help speed up the boot process here is a little trick to do if you are running windows xp. right click my computer / scroll to properties / click acvanced tab / where it says startup and recovery click settings / now edit where it says : time to display operating system / now change it from 30 to 2. that should speed up the boot process
and where it says : time to display recovery options / now change that from 30 to 3 that's it / now just hit apply and the next time you boot up it will take a shorter time.
