Please excuse my naïveté: exactly what types of websites am I supposed to steer clear of to avoid contracting malware infections?

Porn
Free Smileys
Almost all free game download websites (of course if the game is opensource to begin with its a different story)
probably more but thats what I can think of off the top of my head.

Uh...no. Free games are all usually virus free. You have the smileys thing right. Screensavers, thats one. Free antiviruses, other then AVG, Avast or Spyware doctor or Mcafee, Torrents, Keygen/Cracks for trials, "FULL VERSION!" stuff, etc.

Also, rapidshare, etc.

random toolbars, especially the POS 'mywebsearch'... I'm sure everyone here knows what I am talking about.

spam ads (10000000th visitor, free ipod, etc.)

most every illegal torrent

free music

EDIT: ohm55.. trust malwarebytes and ClamWIN as well.

I'm estimating that less than 1% of the torrents I have downloaded contain viruses! If you're careful, read the commends, and order by the number of seeds, then you should be fine.

Also with rapidshares. warez-(CENSORED).org uses rapidshares and ive never got a virus... pay attention to post counts and how well known they are. (sorry breaking the rules if i share the website)

Your an idiot if you download a .exe and you dont know what it is.

not all rapidshare is bad. Just stay leery and clear of stuff your not sure of.
