Default Trouble downloading

I have a no. of Microsoft downloads that go to my computer , but they will not install. Neither automatic or manual works. What do you do when a download fails to update? I have Windows XP Media. My HP computer is about six years old. Here is one of the updates that won't install ; Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86
Download size: 0 KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is a full cumulative update that contains many new features building incrementally upon .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, and includes cumulative servicing updates to the .NET Framework 2.0 and .NET Framework 3.0 subcomponents. The .NET Framework 3.5

Please someone help me, I'm not too computer literate ,but I feel this could be serious. Any little help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
