There is no such thing as a "best" virus scanner.

However, using multiple virus scanners works wonders! A year or two ago I found this website: http://virusscan.jotti.org/

When you upload a file to their server, it runs the uploaded file through around 20 of the top/most used virus scanners. While scanning the file, it gives you a list of each scanner's results.

Jotti has saved me from countless viruses. I learned to never trust one single virus scanner when I first used Jotti:
Norton hadn't picked up anything on a virus I once made. I was disappointed in Norton (although kind of proud of myself :D ) Kaspersky didn't pick up anything either, but when I uploaded the virus to Jotti, only 3 picked up the viruses attached to the file.

I have uploaded to Jotti before and had only one virus scanner detect something. While all the others failed, only one worked, but that was all I needed.

This is simply proof that while some computers are moderately safe, there is so such thing as a completely safe computer. I STRONGLY recommend using http://virusscan.jotti.org
