Default Scam

Hi all, today I was confronted by a message on my browser, it was posing as Cheshire police, it said my my browser has been locked because I'm accused of illegal activity and I have to pay 100 before the start a legal case and for them to unblock my browser, obviously this was a scam, but it did seem to have my browser locked, so I went through my programs and deleted anything I didn't like the look of and restarted the system, the browser was no longer locked, but I'm still not confident I'm not infected, I was on here before with a security issue and someone pointed me to a clean up tool box sticky on here, would you suggest that as being the best method of dealing with this? I'm currently running a full Avast system scan

Yeah full scan with your chosen AV,
Then use an anti spyware software followed by locating open ports and close them
