Default Keygen.exe Virus

I recently attempted to torrent Nero software and I ran into a virus in the process. After finishing the download I ran the Nero setup and everything went as expected, this is until I tried to open the key generator. After I attemped to open the key generator I started to get hit with numerous pop-ups. I quickly realized I had turned off my McAfee firewall earlier and then re-enabled it. After doing so it brought up a warning that keygen.exe was trying to access the internet, I blocked all access as soon as I was able to. After this I restarted my computer and erased the folder that contained the file containing the virus. After erasing this folder I ran McAfee Virus Scan and came up clean, but the thing is I'm having problems with my computer. On startup I get a "45 runtime error." I also cannot right click on my desktop or folders in my documents. The only other strange thing I've noticed is I cannot run msconfig. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Now that we got rid of the obligatory "don't steal software" comment can we please attempt to fix my problem?

i'd get rid of mcafee since it tends to miss a lot of stuff that's clearly obvious and it bogs your system down big time. Go with AVG free edition, avast home or avira personal edition classic all of which are free, use low resources and detect far more than mcafee.

I'll give that a shot and see if they detect it, thank you very much.

Downloaded AVG free and as soon as I started the scan it determined keygen.exe was a trojan virus. I cleaned the virus but the problems remain; I still can't right click on system folders or my desktop icons, yet I can right click on the items in the system tray, I still can't run msconfig. The only thing that was fixed was the runtime error, it no longer displays on start-up. Any other suggestions???

Try running your antivirus software in safe mode. Also do the same with your spyware software. If that fails then try running "chkdsk /r" from command prompt . And if that fails, try running "sfc /scannow" from command prompt (ya xp disc is needed for this)

it's always good to have a purchased version of an anti-virus program.the problem with free D/L of an anti-virus, is that company's know when multiple vesions of the same ID tracking # come from multiple IP,s when doing updates for either the software or the definitions. so they will make sure when you go to do updates, it will screw up your computer.
