Default Hard drive killer

Excuse me for this question. I have searched for answers and I have found none.
I've read in an article about certains worms or viruses that have the capability of destroying a Hard drive. This "thing is rare" is what I read.
This is why I am trying to find answers to be sure it is true or just a rumour.
Thanks in advanced

well.... if u let a virus do enough damage to your computer, and u dont do anything, i think that a bad enough one will. im not exactly sure though. as long as u have raid and a good hard drive with mirroring and av programs, u should be safe. dont worry about it.

I believe with NIS I am on the safe side.
Since I was wondering there is the chance "out there" could be a virus with the capabilities of rendering useless a Hard drive even after the threat has been removed I posted this question to.
jac006, thanks for the input.
