Heh yes running a dedicated computer as a firewall is a great idea.

However for someone who wants somethign cheap and simple, just get a router with built in firewall. 50$ solution and it's easy to work with.

However if you want to go far, get a real firewall like a Cisco PIX or Cisco Router running a security enhanced version of IOS.

Seriously, the best way is an old computer, it doesnt have to be good, just one that you can install a firewall OS on, I've got one, it's like 100Mhz, 64MB RAM, and a 5GB HDD, I just put the firewall linux on, installed a few network cards, and off I went, works a treat.
