One websites describes ECHELON as the following "ECHELON is a term associated with a global network of computers that automatically search through millions of intercepted messages for pre-programmed keywords or fax, telex and e-mail addresses. Every word of every message in the frequencies and channels selected at a station is automatically searched. The processors in the network are known as the ECHELON Dictionaries. ECHELON connects all these computers and allows the individual stations to function as distributed elements an integrated system. An ECHELON station's Dictionary contains not only its parent agency's chosen keywords, but also lists for each of the other four agencies in the UKUSA system [NSA, GCHQ, DSD, GCSB and CSE]"

I'm researching this topic at the moment and want to get an idea what other people think of it.

to tell you the truth it probably doesnt - not to you personally.

that said if someone wants to invade my privacy without consulting me in anyway, AND break numerous laws in multiple countrys at the same time (which turns out to not be a problem as they exist above the law - christ thats not how the worlds supposed to work, nothings supposed to be above the law :\ ), then im going to do everything i can to make it hard for them.
just because i can

that means encrypted disk partitions and swapspace, openpgp..ssl..etc...

if they wanna hear me talking about the hotchick in class to my mate on IM their at least going to have to break ssl

here... have some random crypto quotes:

"Within Europe, all email, telephone, and fax communications are routinely intercepted by the United States National Security Agency"
-- European Parliament report "Assessing the Technologies of Political Control"

"No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks."
-- Article 12 Universal Declaration of Human Rights

"I am smug enough to say that NSA can't break RSA or discrete logs."
-- Bob Silverman posting to sci.crypt, January 5, 1996.

"Legality? That particular aspect didn't enter into the discussions."
-- Benson K Buffham, Deputy Director NSA when questioned by the Senate Church Committee about domestic monitoring

"NSA systematically intercepts international communications, both voice and cable."
-- General Allen, Director of the NSA testifying before Congress

"Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy. The savage's whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe. Civilization is the process of setting man free from men"
-- Ayn Rand, The Fountainhead (1943)

"First they came for the hackers.
But I never did anything illegal with my computer,
so I didn't speak up.
Then they came for the pornographers.
But I thought there was too much smut on the Internet anyway,
so I didn't speak up.
Then they came for the anonymous remailers.
But a lot of nasty stuff gets sent from anon.penet.fi,
so I didn't speak up.
Then they came for the encryption users.
But I could never figure out how to work PGP anyway,
so I didn't speak up.
Then they came for me.
And by that time there was no one left to speak up."
