Years ago when IBM keyboards were prevalent, if a key stopped working or something like that on the IBM Model M keyboard, it was often suggested to hold the keyboard about 6 inches over your desk and then drop it. In my experience, more often than not, that would fix the problem.
Dirt or some other foreign substance got in there and was preventing contact of parts some how, the sudden shock of dropping the keyboard, or in your case, bashing the mouse on the table, dislodged whatever was in there and made things work again.
