I went and bought a networking+ book and the first thing it teaches you is the OSI model. Do people in the real world when working on router and switches benefit from knowing what's going on in layer 2, 3 and being able to solve problems.

I would imagine somebody does although I couldn't give a jot. Otherwise why go to all the trouble of writing a book about it. maybe get yourself more conversant with it and then you will know.

In the real world It's most important to be able to differentiate between layers 2, 3, and 4. Because when troubleshooting you have to know if the problem is a switching layer issue or upper level like IP addressing, or a TCP/UDP problem.

I don't really hear people going around talking about the OSI model all the time but it's good to have a basic understanding of it. I think the TCP/IP model is simpler and more relevant, but they are similar.
