Display Crashing

Hey Everyone,

For the past few days my display has been crashing to a black screen every time I watch a video or play a game. It's also displayed in black and white and shown green streaks running throughout. The crash only happens after I'm watching a video for a few minutes or if I go into a game like dota it'll crash almost instantly. These are the tests I've done so far.

I uninstalled the current NVIDIA drivers and replaced them with a few previous editions.

I reformatted the computer just to make sure it wasn't viruses, etc.

I've tried several monitors and the problem persists across different monitors.

I've taken out the GPU and used the on-board video my mobo has. This resulted in the computer having more issues and not even being able to load to the desktop. Upon booting up it will simply crash and restart. It made it once all the way to the desktop using just the mobo but quickly shut off and rebooted itself.

I'll be switching out my gpu for an old one a friend has later on tonight to see if that makes a difference. Any thoughts? Thanks!

If you're in the region where the bad thunder boomers took place, and you're not using surge protection, you may have taken a strike. Or a spike when the power came back on.
We got our asses handed to us down here in south Louisiana yesterday. Power out for hours then spiked some of our equipment when it came back on. I have a UPS protecting my gear. Cheap investment that panned out.

Nah, no thunderstorms here. There was some light rumbling like a week ago but I doubt that did anything.

Any possibility of your GPU overheating? Does it have a fan and if so, is it still functioning properly? Also, this sounds like a hardware problem but you could check for any driver updates or reinstall them just to be sure.

But I'm leaning towards either overheating, or bad card or motherboard slot.

Overheating is a possibility. What are your temps?

Try updating your mobo's drivers, especially chipset drivers.

If you are overheating, have you checked your thermal paste or do you know if any was even used? Check your CPU cooler and be sure it is seated firmly and correctly as I have seen one come partially loose before.

There is also the possibility of the mobo is dying.

Problem is windows 10, does it on my laptop, my friends and also my step dads office computer so I loaded 7 back on them.

Here is how we test it.

I want you to partion/split your harddrive and format with windows 7, that way you won't lose anything, or revert to windows 7 as windows 10 allows you but you have limited time (1month maybe?)
