Having an Anti-Virus doesn't mean a thing if the end-user clicks a dodgy link and ignores a security prompt (which is what they seem to do anyway). Really you want a full AV with real-time protection and the full works in order to try and prevent the PC being infected.
As for the question, I think at the moment Avast is considered an overall better package (more in terms of system performance than actual protection).
