Don't need a big debate just which one. The end user likes his adult sites so the crap I've gotten cleared off could have been prevented with a good free AV. He's a good guy really other wise I would not have been hammering away at his laptop for 2 days now.

So which of the 2 for my client?

My personal advice would be neither. I find Avast useless and Avg useless with enormous system drag also. Why not just remove them all and use the installed Windows Defender which is an antivirus with some ability to catch the real issues which are Malware in Windows 8 and above. It will take over if you uninstall current av.

Hi! My question is "What was your client using when they got infected"??
Again I say going on porn sites is not safe and I doubt if any security can help.
Sand boxing would be my suggestion or VM! I know very little about either one, but I'm sure you do!!

Gary I have taken a Windows 8 pc with only WD armed no WOT and no Mbam or Emsisoft and gone off the rails with infections simply by going to 3rd party download sites and ignoring any and all caution. I then restored using a Macrium Reflect 6 Image File and gone back with WOT on all browsers, Mbam Pro and Nod32 Antivirus and sailed through the same situation without a scar.

Good to know those things Rich. I use MSE, MBAM premium, and WOT. I have never been infected. I'm also a safe surfer and I don't do porn sites LOL.
I haven't up graded to Macrium Reflect 6 yet. I have never had a problem with the 5.3 so I have been denying the upgrade. I have a lot of images and I want to keep them. Not sure what the upgrade would do to them. Would they still work??

Keep in mind this system belongs to an "end user". End users usually don't have the same technical aptitude as we do. We know better than to stick our necks out surfing. But if we choose to we know how to protect ourselves. And if we get slapped with something, we know how to clear it out. That's the difference between us and the accursed "end user". No offence "end users", but it is what it is.

In this case the person is brilliant when it comes to remodeling hotels and office buildings but is somewhat less than stellar when it comes to computers. They know I'm good with computers and my flying models so they come to me.

As for running bareback with just windows defender, you have got to be kidding. Windows defender is a joke. It misses more than it catches.
I tried it for a while but when I had to resort to reinstalling the OS twice I got NOD32 then updated to the suite and have been using that for years. Very happy with it. Well worth the expense. But not every one knows how to get it, install it, and run it on a regular bases. And not every one wants to spend money on anti virus protection.

I had to do something and it was either AVG or Avast. I went with AVG. If it was my machine you bet your bippy it would have ESET on it.

I have always been a proponent of Nod32 even though at the moment I am elsewhere because I am a reseller of another product but I will always have a soft spot for Eset.
Microsoft made the brag that Windows 8 with WD and UEFI bios, secure boot and nothing else was impenetrable. I set out one night with a group on a Linkedin Business owners forum to prove that wrong and prove it we sure did!
Personally I have never seen WD or MSE catch anything but such is my experience so any other product I have ever used out performed then but I never said they were good either!

Gary your image files from 5 will work in Macrium 6, just remember to make new rescue disks is all for 6 version. I might add the gui is much improved and easier to follow than version 5 and it is noticeably faster especially on restore of image file.
Sorry about being off topic, I'll quit it but he asked....

Thanks Rich! This forum is not a fanatic about getting off topic like others I have been a member on. As long as the OP is not being confused, a little off topic seems to be excepted here. I doubt if setishock is confused and I'm sure he knows all about Macrium Reflect; which would be a good tool for his client to have in their arsenal if they like the porn sites. LOL
Gary!
