I have always used adobe reader but I don't really like the direction they're going to the new Reader DC. Foxit is a great alternative and I'm about to switch over. Reader has become really boated and I feel like they have too many updates for a simple application.
I have tried them all as I am a serious Adobe Acrobat user and none of them compare to the ease of Adobe. Problem is Adobe's frequent updates make it an easy target for Malware if you are not up to date so many are trying other ways.
The best software to open them would be Adobe Acrobat (only Adobe Reader if you're not editing).
But if you're creating a pdf file then it's probably not worth the hefty price tag for Acrobat, something like Foxit PDF Editor would be better as a free option.
