That's a wax as part of the glove to protect against fish thorns. It is a fishing glove.

I don't really have a green thumb or anything

This is the first I have heard of fishing with gloves on. I guess you learn somthing new every day.

Oh, it's just a general precaution against thorns and fishing tools. I also use it to catch crabs with bare hands. Those claws could do nasty damage. Trust me, I know.

There are some fish in my home aquarium that gloves aren't even enough to save you, their fins slice right through most rubber gloves with ease.
