6gb of ram but task manager says 4?

max memory is not ticked. says 4096mb max if I tick the box. In addition there is no integrated graphics chip available. It's an i7-920. So there isn't an option in the bios that deals with that. I can get 12gb of ram for 95 bucks. I might just do that if this can't be figured out.

I had a situation like this before and I don't know if this applied to your motherboard. It may be that your motherboard does not see more than 4 gig of memory.

I had an AMD X2 system with 3 gig memory but the board only saw two gig. Windows will report seeing 3 gig memory but everything else says two.

I think this is such your case.

My board supports up to 24gb of memory. This has literally just started. I have had this comp for 7 years and now its doing this. I think I will just buy new ram.

Well this time I literally took them out, tried them one by one to make sure each stick worked, and then put them back in. Problem solved.

Corroded connections. Unplugging then plugging them back in was enough friction to bite through.
