Port Forwarding & Port Triggering?

Hello,

So I have an N64 emulator set up with a plugin which allows multiplayer. Essentially in the plugin you simply type a command to connect to the other player's server by entering their I.P address followed by the port number.

The other person I'm trying to play with has set up a port forwarding rule by entering into their router (BT Hub), quite a simple one. Just simply entered in the port number and allowed it for TCP&UDP and then that's more or less done. I was able to connect to the server without a problem.

However, when I set up the exact same rule (using a Virgin Super Hub 2) I entered in the same port number and same settings, tried setting up my own server but they can't connect. Why is this? Does Port Triggering have anything to do with this and will I need to create a rule for this also?

If someone could let me know how I could get this to work that'd be great. Additionally what different port ranges mean, etc?
