NIC Troubleshooting

First of all, right now I do not have an issue. I want to ask about using a loopback plug on a PC.

Once you insert the loopback plug into the network jack on the PC exactly what do you do? Do you just ping the 127.0.0.1 address or is there more to it?

I saw that one in my search. I was told you could use a loopback plug and insert it into the network jack on a PC. Then do something??? and you would know if the NIC was good or bad. I have not been able to find directions for this. All I can find is it can be done.
