Which Virus Protection to Get (for a Computer Newbie)?

I would go for Nortons

Norton destroyed my pc and laptop. My CPU went up to a steady 100%. Has not gone down at all unless I removed it. Once I removed it, my CPU went down to about 10-30%.

Now I'm running Avast, MSE, and ZoneAlarm.

But if you insist on buying, I would recomm. kaspersky, webroot

If you already uninstall norton get CCLEANER and do a registry clean so it removes all the files that didn't uninstall from norton do it a few times to make sure everything get s removed, after that if you have windows install go with Microsoft security essentials it's. Free and it's been working great for the past 2 years, if you don't want that look into Avast, spy bot search and destroy, or avg, let us know how it goes. Good luck.

I perfer AVG over all else

Internet Security Software | ESET Smart Security with Anti-Theft Heck of a deal for 2 years on 3 computers. I just renewed mine for all 3 of my gals.

You just can't beat how good it works and so quietly in the background. When it spots something it just romps and stomps all over it. I get PUP warnings on pages online that I really like. And warnings about various websites and no it's not porn.
It still has that incredible small memory footprint and doesn't worm its way in to everything on your system like Norton does. Sorry for the profanity guys. Norton is a virus that makes itself impossible to completely remove. More people that install Norton soon come to regret it. AOL software was like that.
ESET all the way!

Now be honest when was the lat time you ever used Nortons?
I can say for sure you have not used Nortons in the last 4 years otherwise you would not post such drivel....... get your facts right.

I've always disliked Norton. Although it's been a year or two since i've had to deal with it, there's a chance it might have improved since then.

I've always used AVAST! and I always recommend that. For two main reasons:

1. The FREE protection is as good if not better than a lot of paid ones.
2. I've never gotten a virus while using it, ever. 6 years of Avast and not a single infection; even when i was a torrent fiend.

In regards to Antivirus programs never ever use McAfee or Norton, both are very heavy on a computer and will take up too many of its resources.
The best AntiViruses that are paid are:
1.) Vipre
2.) Sophos

For free ones Comodo works great and has an accompanying Firewall, this company also has a team that will remotely assist you with any problems with their products.

And Always put MalwareBytes on your computer, while it is dangerous to have more than one AntiVirus on your computer MalwareBytes is a must have and can remove a great number of things.

You should also install Spybot, together Malwarebytes and Spybot will remove anything that gets by your antivirus (and there will be always be things that get by as no Antivirus is perfect)

I work on computers for a living so if you have any other questions let me know!
Hope this helps!
