So I am getting two old Mac G3's and a G4. The G3's don't have hard drives and the G4 has everything. Now I know that Apple lock their hardware so that you cannot go and use it a Windows system. My question is can you use hardware that is not locked in Mac systems?

I will be honest, I know very very little about Mac hardware. But I would have thought that any hard drive would have sufficed.

Having said that, why not just search on eBay or possibly Amazon.

Mac hardware can run Windows. And on the other end, if all you are replacing is the hard drive, any drive should suffice.

I know for sure that the g4 powerbook would be able to handle ubuntu 10.04. You would need to burn the iso to a cd, reboot to the cd by pressing command + c.

you would probably be able to find the original make and model of the original hdd on ebay and get the compatible mac osx o.s. if your best bet would be going thru the hackintosh path for the g3.
