'Tent' mode for laptop

so ive connected 2 22" monitors to my lappy
and i would really like to be able to stand it up some how
this way it can 'breathe'
but every time i try to open the laptop screen so it can stand like a tent
the laptop screen drivers kick in and adjust the resolution on my 22" screen

so is there something that i can do?
is there a keyboard shortcut that i can press to activate and deactivate the laptop screen without turning off the external screens?

Please try Fn + F8 (I believe this is the same for most laptops).

It doesn't hurt to have the lid down. Laptops breathe from the sides and bottom. Just make sure there's clearance around and under it.
As for the lid open changing the resolution. The laptop vid system is limited in what it can do. When the lid is open the internal screen is switched on. Since it's the primary screen, all monitors go to the native resolution of the built in screen. When the lid is down the system is no longer tasked with driving the internal screen and can go to the external screens native resolution.
