I meant with Ads on the sides once I get a lot of readers I could use Google AdSense and Google will pay me a small amount depending on the ads clicks
blogger give away free blog hosting.
they are also pretty fine about letting you host ads on your blog.
you're still not going to get rich quick.
When writing a blog you get two options, you either copy content (be prepared to never reach a search result as your content is not original), or you need to write really good and really original content, -though this will take time. (so you may end up getting more per hour working at burger king!)
Then there is the google ads, for the past around 6 years I've kept a blog, the theme of the blog is basically how to do stuff, and everything is covered from how to make a flower bed, how to build speakers to how to build embedded software, or how to make circuits. (so the blogs mostly take the format of lessons).
The content is all original, it's reasonably quality, (I have had a comment left by a professor at an Indian university saying that he'd wanted to use my blog posted lesson on logic reductions to teach a class.
In my adsense account: $0.83 over six years.
and when I turn off my ad blocker and view my site I can see the ads, but they have nothing to do with my site content, google is supposed to serve content specific ads,
-the idea is, that if you're running a music review site, you'll want ads served for record stores, that way you have ads that your readers are likely to be interested to see, (so you are happy because your ads are relevant), the relevancy of the ads affects the user -users are happier to see relevant ads, and they are more likely to click adverts. -which earns you money, and of course the shop who are paying google to display ads, are supposed to say where they are happy for their ads to be displayed, -they should want them to be served in relevant sites to increase click through chances. the advertising shop pays every time an advert is displayed.
google only pay you every time an advert is clicked.
Google aren't serving relevant ads, they are just sitting in the middle putting pointless ads that none of my readers would want to see onto my page, nobody clicks them.
so I have no benefit (no click so no earnings), my readers have no benefit (no targetted advertising introducing them to things that they may like), the people who wanted their adverts online have no benefit because google don't target them like they said they would (so no additional customers for them).
The only people benefiting are google, sitting in the middle creaming in profit for displaying useless ads. (if you sign in to ad sense to advertise it costs starting from around 10p per advert) if I only get 20 views per day, google are making a few quid, (and I'm getting nothing)
Admittedly I could load up the page with more ads, for different ad agencies, but I don't want to do that. there is only one add in a sidebar on the blog, to be honest it's more interesting to use for getting an idea of the people visiting the blog. (example half don't see the ads due to script block/ghostery or similar).
Long story short.
you can do online "journalism", writing blog articles. but don't expect to get rich off it.
