I just received this ASUS notebook but noticed it does not have a d drive in disk management. Is there a way to hook up an external USB CD-ROM to play CD's?

You shouldn't need to do any configuration. Did you actually plug in an external CD-ROM drive to a USB port? I have used quite a few different netbooks which don't come with built-in CD-ROM drives and have used an external without issue simply by plugging it in.

It should work that way, but for some reason it doesn't. I even added the CD-ROM as new hardware. I don't think the notebook has Windows Media Player, so I'm going to try downloading that next and see if that helps.

As soon as you plug in an external device or CD drive, it will show up. The computer can't show you something that isn't connected yet.
