need advice for blue screen.

This PC is mainly used for recording High definition TV.

Past couple of weeks I've been getting the blue screen of death on the HTPC. Windows7.
I have'nt made any hardware changes or additions for over six months.

I suspect crummie recorded TV quaility becauce previous to the BS the playback was distorted, skipping and basically unwatchable ( I use OTA antenna and when it rains hard some channels have very weak signal).
If anyone knows the name of this file for corupted recordings.
bluescreens.png

Note the top file name circled in red.

This was my first attemp to resolve this BS issuse was to look for the top file name then rename it OLD.

However there was no top file name. I did observe a long string of zeros on the bottom.
The BS does'nt stay on very long is there a way I can retrive the last BS message to find these file names?

Next time I see the BS I will try a print screen/Paint/phaste/save
This is the first time I've ever sean a BS, doe's this only happen to desktop type PCs?
Any advice is appreciated STB

No it happens to all PC's. Check the cooling of the HTPC. Get a temp monitoring program and make sure the temps are normal during recording (to make sure that it isn't blue screening do to heat). I use CoreTemp. It could also be RAM going bad causing it to blue screen. I've never used it, but Memtest will check your RAM and see if there are any issues.

As a side note, I'm interested in your setup. How do you record the TV? Are you able to watch TV while you record? Can you post or send a PM to me with the way you have things setup and what software/hardware you use. Thanks!

I have periodically checked the CPU's temp. after heavy PC usage though the BIOS. since I'm using BIOS I have never checked temp. during a recording.

This PC has never got'nt hot usalley the CPU is at 35 (I think celcus) and sys. around 105 fernhight.

How well doe's CoreTemp work it appears to be a free software.

This is a prebuilt PC so I'm thinking they used some second rate RAM modules. PC has been in steadie recording and playback for two weeks over one year no problems at all.
RAM is relatively inexpensive. I have 6GB of DDR3 RAM can you recommend a decent set of RAM modules for this PC remember it's mainly to record TV.

I use Windows 7 media center as a recording software, it has a TV guide and it's kindof like a free Tivo but way better. (I use free over the air antenna for the TV signal.)

I have two TV tuners one is a PCI slot the other is USB portable. I can record one show and watch another from the PCs second tuner or I can record two shows simutaniously and watch TV w/ the TV's tuner.
Thanks STB

What hardware do you use?Tuner: 1600-950 Haupague
here's the card I have
http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hvr1600.html get from ebay for $15.
I have free OTA Antenna as well (for going on 2 years now) and the biggest complaint I have is missing my DVR. I've looked at several solutions, but couldn't find any that would work for me.

I'm interested in a good description of your setup. What card(s) do you use? How do you have them connected?
PCI slot & USB. Are you able to watch tv while recording something else? yes w/ two tuners Is the Win7 Media Center free? I have windows 7 home version WMC is includedDoes it require a special version of Windows to setup? How is the quality of the recordings? excellent. Can you stream them to another computer/tablet? yes w/ a extender

I know, alot of questions and not much help on your problem but it sounds like if you can help me with a good description, you might have the setup I've been looking for.

very good advice I'll have to read all of this. I really want to see the file name or file # on my blue screen.

To start w/ I plan to update drivers, virus & sys. scan, CHKDSK check mememory w/ at startup press F8 (then physically remove RAM hardware).

sys restore point prior to dissconnecting electrical power to house 2 weeks ago. ? when I do this restore will it erase the recorded TV from last 2 weeks?

I think I created this BS error message myself couple of weeks ago I had to repair a 220Volt circuit for my clothes dryer, which involved switching all the breakers to off (none of the circuits where labled).

basically cutting the power to intire house, I actualley had to do this serval times over a few days and I believe the PC was in sleep mode.

I read this. and am thinking I could have possiabley ruined the external HDD which is connected w/ USB cable.
Cause
This issue occurs because of a race condition in the USB Video driver when a USB video device is unloaded.

I will report back w/ results however this BS doe'snt occur on a regular basis.
Thanks Guy's for the surport

I'd get a UPS for that system. They really don't cost much. Office supply places have the better prices.

I'll try out CoreTemp will it dissplay the temps. of all hardware? like HDDs cpu, MOBO ect.

I have been using the BIOS is the BIOS not accurate?
edit I don't believe I can chech temps' w/ BIOS while W7MC is recording (which is probablley when the PC has the biggest load).

I'll check out Memtest when I searched it it came up as Memtest86+ is the same as what you are recommending?

When you get it flip it over and open the battery hatch. Connect the flying battery lead and button it back up. Plug it in and turn it on. Let it charge the battery over night then plug in your devices.
It is a surge supressor and a battery back up. So when the power goes out you have time to shut down your computer instead of it crashing. I have one on my personal computer gear and one on my office computer. It's a solid investment.

This program checks for drivers which have been crashing your computer. If your computer has displayed a blue screen of death, suddenly rebooted or shut down then this program will help you find the root cause and possibly a solution.

Whenever a computer suddenly reboots without displaying any notice or blue screen of death, the first thing that is often thought about is a hardware failure. In reality, on Windows most crashes are caused by malfunctioning device drivers and kernel modules. In case of a kernel error, many computers do not show a blue screen unless they are configured for this. Instead these systems suddenly reboot without any notice.

This program will analyze your crash dumps with the single click of a button. It will tell you what drivers are likely to be responsible for crashing your computer. It will report a conclusion which offers suggestions on how to proceed in any situation while the analysis report will display internet links which will help you further troubleshoot any detected problems.

Conclusion

8 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. A third party driver has been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer. It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites. Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers:

igdkmd64.sys (Intel Graphics Kernel Mode Driver, Intel Corporation)

If no updates for these drivers are available, try searching with Google on the names of these drivers in combination the errors that have been reported for these drivers and include the brand and model name of your computer as well in the query. This often yields interesting results from discussions from users who have been experiencing similar problems.

Read the topic general suggestions for troubleshooting system crashes for more information.

Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is actually responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.
