You would get more for your money if you built a Computer ... but if you buy off the shelf try to go for Windows 7 64bit for todays gaming.
 
Hundreds. Trust me. I build my own. I have only had 1 store bought system and won't do that again.
It's not complicated. There's countless youtube vids, and tuts out the ying yang. And then you have us.
The really hard part about building a computer is first deciding what you want to do with it. Next you set a budget and go from there.
