Dell Poweredge 1800 NOOB HELP

Hi everyone, recently received a Dell Poweredge 1800 as payment for a job i did for someone.

At home i use my laptop as a media server for another laptop in the house and my playstation so this SEEMED like a great opportunity to get a dedicated server set up so i can go back to using my laptop as my laptop. However its a little bit beyond me.

I have quite a few components knocking about from fixing my own desktops (over the past few years so some of the components are a little antiquated to say the least).

If i post up some images of what goodies i've got to play with could someone point me in the right direction please? Once the servers running i should be able to get the network up and running my self its just the hardware and setting up that i'm way out of my depth on.....i think

Checking the specs, it is pretty old.

Of you're setting it up as a NAS type device, it should serve you well.

Agreed, but the 12GB of RAM limit is a huge damper.

There is space for 2c processors, yet i only have one, shall i find another for it? and if so, do both processors have to be the same?

Got some drives for the RAID at work i think also.

A home server really isn't going to need more than 12GB of RAM in most cases. My home server is a file server made out of my old gaming desktop build. I use it as a time lapse security cam capture point, a file server, and to download large files if it needs to do so overnight. With 2GB of RAM it's a bit slow when it's got a lot happening, but I don't need more than 4GB for that really.

I got 2 Dell Precision 470s recently and both of them had bad capacitors (bulging/leaking). I don't know if that's a common thing among Dell servers/workstations, but something to check.
