That's weird. Here's what was said in the santa hat thread:
Avatar sizes have been updated to 100 x 100 (120 for site team) and for those with more than 25 posts, animations are enabled but please remember that they have to be aligned with the board rules - PG rated, etc. Folks with more that 5K posts have larger PM boxes as well. Ho, ho, ho...etc

yep, that's what I understand too.
people who have been moderators in the past, and therefore helped the forum to grow have been allowed special privileges as a way of saying thanks for the help over the years.
I looked at my private messages I have 12, (of my 5000 limit)
9 of those tell me I've been thanked.
but don't feel to sorry for me, the last member who sent me a PM got banned.
(it must take serious amount of stupid to PM spam to a moderator)
