I recently obtained a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. The sound does not appear to be working, as it only plays beeps, and tells me that there is a sound problem. Does it need a new motherboard?

Have you checked the drivers in device manager are all up to date?
are there any issues showing in device manager?

no it does not mean you need a new motherboard at this stage

let me know what you have tryed and I will get you to download a copy of Microscope which is free iso burn to cd and run that it will give you a detailed report of any problems with motherboard or sound issues.

It's probably a driver issue.

Access device manager by:
Windows XP: right-click My Computer>properties>hardware tab>device manager
Windows 7: right-click My Computer>properties>device manager

Look for the sound and if it has a yellow triangle with an ! inside it. If so that means the driver isn't loaded properly. You can try to right-click and choose update driver. You can let Windows search for one. If it doesn't find it, go to Dell's website and go to the support section and you can enter your service tag (or let it find it for you automatically) and it should give you a link to re-download it.
