first custom gaming pc build

OK so I think there is only the memory, the optical drive and the anti-virus left. Obviously I've already chosen windows 7 64 bit :)

The memory I was going to go with this, but I think it might be overkill again

Newegg.com - CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ16GX3M2A1600C10

Now the optical drive is what is confusing me. I see all these different types and I'm honestly not sure which one I should get. This is the one I had picked out

Newegg.com - LITE-ON Black 18X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA DVD-ROM Drive Model iHDS118-04 - CD / DVD Drives

The Corsair Vengeance memory you've chosen is excellent, and in fact is the identical memory that I am now using. However, the only reason I purchased 16GB, was because I got a great buy at $74.99. Truth is, 8GB is more than enough for now, and probably for the next couple of years. I've run all kinds of apps, games, etc. and never loaded more than 4.8GB of memory at any one time. So, you can save some money with 8GB of RAM.

As for the optical drive, in my opinion they're all about the same. I've used Samsung, LITEON, Sony, Asus, all work fine.

However, I took a quick look at the drive you've chosen, and it appears to be READ only. You'll need to research that further, and be sure it also BURNS media, like this drive...

Newegg.com - ASUS 24X DVD Burner - Bulk 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS - CD / DVD Burners

I was typing while you were posting so I didn't see your suggestion until I submitted my post. That's also a good choice. Prices are amazing these days, many under $20!!!

Like the title states, this is my first attempt at building my own PC. My budget for this is between $1000 and $1500 although I'd like to stay middle of the road with the price.

My first problem is where to start. My mind set tells me to start with the case but I've got the inkling that this is wrong

Yo! Mr. Bad_83,

Before you actually place your order, please list each part you intend to buy, so we can see your final choices, ok?

They're all pretty much the same. It is extremely rare for an optical drive to go bad.

OK so I think that should be everything, right? Here is a rundown of what I'm buying today

Hameister you got anything to add before I do this?

I agree with the OhSnap man. Solid build! Nice choices. Also agree on Avast free antivirus. I use it myself, and am very satisfied. Seems like ol' OhSnap and I think a lot alike!

Only one suggestion. Could you possibly squeeze out another $25.00, and go for this PSU...

Newegg.com - CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

It's modular, which I promise you'll thank me for.

You're building in very tight quarters with a mid-tower case, and you'll have a cable management problem stuffing all the cables someplace. With the PSU I suggested you can use only the cables you actually need.

Makes a big difference, it's also a higher rated PSU. Notice the number of people that bought the one you have listed, and the number of "eggs" satisfied. Now look at the number of people who bought the one I suggested, and the number of "eggs". There's a reason for that. If you're really, really, tight on cash, go for 8GB of memory instead of 16GB....8GB is really all you'll need anyway.

GOOD LUCK!!!

OK the order has been placed.

Hameister I took your advice and went with the psu that you suggested and also downgraded the memory to 8 gb. Now the waiting begins...
