Do you backup?

Hey fellow geeks.
Just want to here how many actually do backups. i have my own scrip that takes care of my backup to an External HDD.
it's activated manually, because i don't want the harddrive performance to suddenly go down if i don't want it to.
I am running a RAID0 setup, so backup is even more important.
I have photos and Videos that i would kill for. I also have a few documents that i would hate to loose.

i have an excel document that shows all Computer, console, phone and monitor related stuff i have ever perchuse and the price.
the list is starting to get big... and expensive. XD

Like location in Real Estate, back-up, back-up, back-up, should be the key to any computer enthusiasts hobby. It's never a question of "if" you will lose all your data, it's only a question of "when".

I have both an internal HDD, as well as an external HDD for data storage back-up, and I use Acronis for the OS SSD back-up.

People that don't do regular backups are living on borrowed time. I do regular file-by-file backups of my data but I also periodically do an image backup so that if my hdd should crash I could restore it back to very close to the same condition it was in prior to the crash. Hameister is right on with the not IF but When statement.

Inevitably, a year or two later, they come to me with a crashed HDD, or some other issue, and when I ask them for their back up media, they say, "Back-up, ahhh, what do you mean? I don't have any back-up".

Then, when I tell them that I can replace the HDD, and re-install the OS, but cannot recover their lost data, oh man, you should hear the whining, and crying. Most people can't even find the OS system recovery disk that came with their machine.

Then, when the crying is over, the anger sets in as they blame the computer industry, or anyone else handy, because their data is gone.

I can count the amount of times a customer had a good backup system in place on one hand. With fingers missing. I have found the backup utility built into Windows 7 to be adequate for most people. I backup every day.

I won't go into how many times I've been able to tell people you should have backed up like I told you to; that subject has been well covered.

I clone each of my drives based on an event, like installing a new program after I've verified it works correctly.

OS SSD drive -> total clone to an HDD
Games SSD drive -> total clone to an HDD
Data drive -> total clone to an HDD

I'm thinking about taking a compressed image of each drive so I can be 2 gens deep.

Can't you just get more money out your business and tell them theirs a cost for recovery? I use to work at OZ computers at 16 and he always use to do that.

Oh, I gave up the business a while back, I'm now referring to neighbors, friends, family members, etc. I don't charge them anything, so I'm in a very good position to say..."remember what I told you 2 years ago you idiot!".

I back up about 3 times, every 2 months or when I have anything important worth backing up the motoe is if you are happy to lose it or it is not important don't bother backing it up if you care about it then sure it is well worth backing it up as one day you will lose it as everything
Mechanical will one day fail
But it does not matter what we say or what we vote people will continue to still not back up or listen because it is to much effort to wait for the backup or even click a button to do it for you the other excuse I have heard is it costs to much to buy the hard disk and my reply is it costs a lot more to get your data back by a data recovery specialist .

The entire issue of computer/use/maintenance, has not been addressed by the average consumer for the last 20 years, and it won't be in the next 20 either.

Back-ups for the average consumer will only be done when the industry figures out a way for the computer to know what the owner needs, and back it up automatically, and hand the media to him/her at breakfast every day.

To the average consumer, the computer is an appliance, no different than a toaster, or blender. Until the consumer understands the difference, nothing will change.
