Do you accept Gonzo photography?

I have a preference for professional photography myself (i.e. steady pictures and movies). I can also see where Gonzo serves a purpose. What have you to say?

oh god. I googled "gonzo" then clicked the second wikipedia article, which i read as "gonzo photography." Looked at the photo and was very confused, then I noticed it said "gonzo pornography" not photography. *facepalm*

I really have no idea what you mean. Can't find any samples, and I've never heard the term before.

Sorry about your confusion. Gonzo photography is where the photographer is part of the action. You'll often see this in YouTube films. Clear enough?

Photographers belong behind the camera not infront, only time a photographer should be seen is by accident in a mirror in the background. Photography is a hobby of mine and there are very few photos of me I avoid the lens end of a camera

The only time this is really considered acceptable is when the photo is designed to be a self-portrait of sorts. If it isn't, that's what horizontal shift is for. It can also be simulated with fixed-lens cameras by taking the photo at a slight angle, then correcting perspective on the enlarger or in photoshop for digital.

Do you feel this should be extended to painters, some of whom have done self-portraits?

Ok don't get smart! Painting and photography are two totally different artforms, painters express themselves and self-portrated are rarely accurate because they depict the artist as he/she sees his/herself. Look at some of the first cameras there was absolutly no way to take a self-portrate picture the timer delay on cameras is still fairly new I believe it was added within the last 20-30 years while cameras have been around since the 1800s
Don't bring one artform into a discusion about another you just show your ignorance!

um. Camera timers have been around for ages. pretty much since mechanical shutters were invented. Before then, one would simply remove a lenscap, then replace after a set amount of time. Obviously, this required a person to do, but i have seen a couple examples of self-portraits where the photographer would set up the camera, the scene, etc. and just have their assistant make the exposure for them or use a dark scene and trigger the lighting themselves once in place. Oh, and there was always the very long release cable. So yeah, plenty of ways to do it. As an example, here's an autochrome self-portrait taken by Édouard Blanc in 1907. I saw a larger sample of this one once, and it was quite interesting. This is all i could find right now.

EDIT: Oh, here's where I saw it. It was used as the cover a while back for an analysis of autochrome plates.

I'm a fan of Gonzo art (Ralph Steadman). And a big fan of the original Dr. Gonzo, Hunter S. Thompson. And I'm also a big fan of the Gonzo Imperial Lager.
