Some of the following answers may surprise some people. The answers are:

1) Radio phone
2) 1950s
3) 1946
4) Bell systems
5) 1979
6) Japan
7) Tokyo
8) 1983
9) 1G

1) Torpedos

Heddy Lamar patented frequency hopping as a means of preventing radio-controlled torpedos (which she was designing along with composer George Anthiel) during WW II. It was one of several inventions Lamar created.

The technology was ignored by the military during the war (the Navy ignored their own people when it came to improving torpedo technology, so a couple unknown civilians didn't ahve a chance).
