I had a Compac Laptop that the MB went dead. I removed the HD "Seagate Momentus 5400.6" and threw the laptop away. I tried to read the HD and it is locked. I need to extract all my files and reformat the drive for future use.
Any ideas or instructions how to?

You can place the hdd in a working rig and boot it to an Ubuntu Live Cd and extract them that way. If you need more help let me know.

Thank you for your attempt to help, but to be honest, it's all chinese to me :) :-(
1. I have only a desktop
2. When I hooked it it marked it as "locked by system"
3. what is "Ubuntu Live Cd?"
I am not a novice but not an advanced computer user, either.
If you give me the steps of how to I would be most grateful.

Ubuntu is an operating system, more commonly known as Linux. The Live CD is what I assume to be a bootable CD that can allow you to preview the OS (which can be useful, apparently) and install the OS.

Joe's saying that you can fit the HDD into a working computer (or an enclosure, via USB, which would be easier) and use the mentioned CD (freely downloadable, I think) to extract what you need; for this, you will have to burn what will likely be an ISO onto a CD/DVD.
