Old HDD

I am trying to get information off of an old HDD that was in a broken computer of mine. I took the HDD out of the comp and bought a Filemate case, but now I'm not sure how to access the drive. Plugged it into the USB and it reads it, but says I have to format it to use it. Is there a virtual machine program I can use to log into the drive? or some other solution? Here are the specifics:

Old HDD has Windows XP OS on it in a Filemate case. All connections work.

New computer being used to access old HDD has Windows 7 Pro.

Any advice is appreciated.

It sounds like the old hard drive either got reformatted already or is corrupted. In the first case you could try a recovery tool like Recuva (Windows) or foremost (Linux). For a corrupted drive you might want to look at SpinRite to help with drive access.

Personally I'd try Recuva first. It's simple to use and works pretty good.

There's also a Mini Linux OS on the Hirens Boot CD which can be used to mount and then read from hard drives in this state, and I've had a lot of luck with it. Download Hiren
