Why the mismatched RAM count? 12GB was fine back in the LGA1366 days, but it requires an odd selection of DIMMs now. Yeah, it'll probably work, but why not bump it to 16GB to make things symmetrical?

G.Skill is top of their game lately as far as RAM if you want a vendor to go with (if it's not already chosen)

Hmm I was thinking of just maxing out my slots and going for 16gb, would be for the best.

is 4x4 or 2x8 better?

2x8 would be more flexible if the board supports it (and it should), and leaves you with more room later on to upgrade to 32GB.

is there any difference in performance and speed with the 2 instead of 4?

Speed wise? Not likely noticeable, but if you try to overclock/adjust timings, you'll have more problems than you would if you had just two vs four.
