Monitors

Hey guys, I'm not really that experienced in terms of computers, and how the different components work, so I came here.

Anyway, I was looking at Black Friday deals planning on getting a new PC, but while I was browsing through deals I noticed something:A lot of them sell everything but the monitor.
I'm willing to pay an extra $200 for the monitor, but is every monitor compatible with every computer? For example: would a Acer monitor be compatible with an Dell SU?

Also, I know that I may seem like a dumbass for posting this, but I seriously want to know.

Brand names don't matter. There are two common interfaces used with PCs, VGA and DVI. VGA is older and DVI is newer. A lot of monitors have connections for both.
