Monitor problem(?)

Is it safe for my monitor to be making a hissing sound when it's at a certain resolution? It never happened before, but I installed Ubuntu which insists 1280x1024 or above needs to be at 75hz, not sure if that has anything to do with it, but it sounds like a rainforest now. I think it's coming from the center of the monitor (it's a CRT, yes I still use one)....

You're straining the capabilities of the monitor. If the refresh rate is too high, the monitor may be outside of its normal range and it'll make that noise. It could also be that you're running it at the right resolution, but the monitor is failing.

So uh... it's almost 2012. Still rocking the CRT? :)

Oh, okay. I'll put the resolution down, but I can't find an option for the refresh rate like I did in Windows. And yup, I like CRTs....don't know why.

Hmm, that's all confusing, I've only been using Linux for 3 days. Is that for a specific version? My one keeps saying "cp: cannot stat `/etc/X11/xorg.conf': No such file or directory" in the terminal when I try and use that......
