My Explorer.exe process is, well, malfunctioning, as far as I can tell. I can't open files by double click, and no shortcuts work either. I can only open files and shortcuts through right clicking them and pressing open in the context menu that opens. Please advise!

P.S: I HAD turned off some services and that's about when it started, but when I turned them all back on and rebooted, it hasn't fixed it. Also, before, my antivirus software wasn't working due to the effects of this malfunction, and I couldn't even open files using right click.

ok i'm wondering if a moderator would allow this... what OS are you running? XP? Vista? 7? Moderators please respond to tell me if i can give him explorer.exe for good use :p

Giving him explorer won't fix the issue. and yes, it would be fine to discuss it here. You're not talking about pirating an entire OS.

grullborg, give this software a shot, it'll root out any major issues with the OS itself, you could very well have an infection going on. If this software can't fix the issue, it might be time for a reload:
A guide and tutorial on using ComboFix

Partly fixed now in that I can open files again, but still, when I click on shortcuts in the start menu or anywhere else, they don't work. Is there anything else I can do before I have to re install, because I got this machine second hand and therefore don't have the installation disk.
P.S: I'm running Windows XP Professional SP3 (I think it's SP3)

Go to Start, Control Panel and Administrative Tools. Double click on Services icon.

One of these is the description of your problem, not sure what one but your problem i think is that one of them is stopped and it makes this problem you're having..

You could try running sfc -scannow in the command line. That does not always require a disk to run.

Here's the logfile:

I haven't done anything yet, so if you have any advice on what to do now, please tell me.
I also noticed when I installed HijackThis, that the installer had errors when it tried to create a desktop and start menu shortcut. I've also noticed the address bar is gone when I'm browsing files on my computer in explorer.exe
