I have a Cisco 3500XL Switch and i'm tring to connected to a Cisco 2600 Router.

When i connect a patch cable between the two the port state on the 3500XL keeps changing from up to down every second, if i use a crossover cable it dosn't change and stays on down.

if i connect the router to a Cisco 2900 Switch or a 3500XL InlinePower Switch it works fine.

I have tried deleteing the config.

Anybody got any ideas?
Thanks

the only guess I have is that there may be a speed/duplex issue that's causing errors and then the port is shut down due to error state. and that you have a very short timeout set on the port.

are you able to logon to the switch (either SSH/Telnet or using the serial cable?)
if you are then the switch will tell you what's going on!

logon, to the switch
type eneable

then type sh int
that'll show you the interfaces on the switch. and what they are doing, and a error count on the interfaces.

you can look at a specific switch using sh int fa0/0/1 (to query port 1)
but if your switch is Gb enabled that command would be show interface ge0/0/1

(this little discrepency is why I don't suggest just typing this first)

I have now replaced the switch with a new one and it is working fine.

I opened the switch and the capacitors on the main board had failed, i replaced them but ios had got so corrupt i am unable to re install the image in recovery mode.

Thanks anyway for your advice 'root'
